Celebrating Mother's day around the world

Mother's day is a special day for moms all around the world. It's a day where families come together to show their appreciation for all that mothers do for them.

There are many different ways that Mother's Day is celebrated, but they all have one thing in common: love and appreciation for mums!

Do you want to celebrate your mom differently this year? Read on for some inspiring ideas!

Different countries, different traditions

Very often, countries celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May, but others, like Mexico and a part of Belgium, have different dates to celebrate.

VIETNAM

In Vietnam, Mother's Day is celebrated in a very special way. "Mua Vu Lan" is recognized as a Buddhist holiday. This is a traditional event, a time for children to repay their parent's devotion and gratitude, especially to mothers.

Even though Vietnam has adopted a fast, modern culture, on Mua Vu Lan you'll see thousands of people visit pagodas, wearing a red or a white rose to honour their mom. The rose symbolizes their love for their mother. A red rose signifies that someone’s mom is still alive. When she has passed away, a white rose will be worn.

BELGIUM

In Belgium, Mother's Day is mostly celebrated on the second Sunday of May. However, there's a part of Belgium, Antwerp, where it is tradition to celebrate Mother's Day on August 15, the day to celebrate Mary, mother of Jesus.

Since Belgium is famous for having the best chocolate in the world (and we can totally vouch for that), kids often give their moms chocolate, in any shape or form.

CHINA

In China, Mother's Day is a time for families to come together and show their gratitude for mums and often also their grandparents.

One tradition that is unique to China is having yummy "jiaozi”: meat or vegetable-filled dumplings that represent the shape of a mother's womb and represent new life.

MEXICO

In Mexico, Mother's Day is celebrated on the 10th of May. On this day, families get together for a special meal and kids will serenade their mothers with songs like "Las Mañanitas" or "Amor de Madre", or they recite a poem.

AUSTRALIA

In Australia, Mother's Day is typically celebrated over a family brunch. Kids often bring homemade dishes to add to the brunch and a bouquet of flowers for their mums.

The above Mother's Day traditions might have inspired you to take on a different, more thoughtful and less commercial, approach to celebrate your mom this year.
